Teichmann backs Wales to excel

Former Springbok and current Newport skipper Gary Teichmann has backed Wales' Six Nations aspirations ahead of their Championship opener against England on February 3.

He told the Western Mail, "If Wales pick the right side, they can be as competitive as anyone in the Six Nations.

"Wales have got England in the first game at the Millennium Stadium, so it will be crucial for them to put up a good performance there to carry them through."

Teichmann believes the game in Wales has vastly improved since his arrival a year or so ago. "Compared with when I first came here, I think there is far more depth in the game.

"If you look at the Welsh-Scottish League, there are six teams up there, including us, who can win. So it's far more competitive than it used to be."
