Manana signs with the Pumas
January 2, 2001

Springbok flanker Thando Manana will play his rugby in Witbank for the Pumas in the 2001 season.

The move is great news for the 23-year-old, who at one stage was in danger of not having a contract for the new season. He originally decided not to renew his contract with Griquas in the hope of joining the Sharks, but the deal fell through and left one of South African rugby's brightest stars without a team for 2001.

And although all the unions had already finalised their contracted players for the new season, the Pumas decided to give the youngster, as well as former Free State winger Jan Harm van Wyk, an opportunity to prove himself.

The news will also be welcomed by new Bulls Super 12 coach Phil Pretorius as he aims to halt a disastrous run in the Sanzar competition for the once-mighty Pretoria-based franchise.
