Joost to captain Springbok 7s

Veteran scrumhalf Joost van der Westhuizen will captain the Springboks to the 2001 Rugby World Cup Sevens at Mar del Plata in Argentina from January 26 to 28.

The 10-man Bok squad, selected after two days of trials in Cape Town, was announced by the Chairman of SARFU's Sevens Committee, Keith Parkinson and National Sevens coach, Norman Mbiko. The squad includes current 15-man Springboks Breyton Paulse, Andre Venter and Ricardo Loubchser as well as Bobby Skinstad, who makes his return from injury.

The full squad is: Andre Venter, Helgard Brink, Warren Brits, Joost van der Westhuizen (capt), Breyton Paulse, Andre Pretorius, Ricardo Loubscher, Bobby Skinstad, Rodger Smith, Paul Treu.

The Management team is Coach Norman Mbiko, Manager Oregan Hoskins and Physio Greg Mackenzie

The squad will gather in Johannesburg on January 16 for a training camp prior to its departure for Argentina on January 20. The Boks are grouped with France, Cook Islands, Canada, Georgia and Chinese Taipei in Pool B and will open the event against Chinese Taipei on January 26. They will also play Canada and Cook Islands on the opening day. They face Georgia and France on the second day of competition.

The top two teams in each Pool will qualify for the Cup quarterfinals, third and fourth placed teams for the Plate quarterfinals and fifth and sixth placed teams for the Bowl quarterfinals, which will be played on the final day of competition, 28 January.
