Mulder wants to be a Shark
January 12, 2001

Veteran Lions centre Japie Mulder is hoping to continue his career with the Sharks.

The Springbok player would like to be released from his contract with the Lions that runs until the end of this year. He has notified the province's management that he would like to move to the Sharks.

"I have a business in Richard's Bay and feel it is in my best interests to be nearer to it," Mulder told Beeld. "I've been with the Lions for 10 years and feel it is time for a change. From a motivational point of view, it will be good to make a change."

Another reason for the move is the presence Sharks coach Rudolf Straeuli. The coach is a former teammate of Mulder's at the Lions and they played together in the triumphant 1995 World Cup team.

"It will be good to play under Rudolf. We get on very well and I'd love to play in a team coached by him."

Johan Prinsloo, the chief executive of the Lions, said they would decide in the new few days if Mulder may be released from his contract.

If the Lions agree to the move, Mulder and another Springbok Andre Snyman will be the Sharks centre pairing for the Super 12.

"We've only played in two Test matches and we don't know each other that well as a combination," Mulder said.
