Skinstad tipped to lead Stormers
January 15, 2001

Stormers coach Alan Solomons has made it clear that he will not consult anyone about the captaincy of the Super 12 team, leading to speculation that he will appoint Bob Skinstad.

Skinstad was named as captain last season, but Corne Krige took over after Skinstad was ruled out through injury. Krige then led Western Province to the Currie Cup.

Skinstad only participated in one training session at the Stormers camp in George, but seemed to be taking charge of the side. Krige did not attend the camp as he has only recently returned from honeymoon.

Solomons told Rapport: "The Stormers team will be named on Tuesday and I will appoint the captain."

According to Rapport, there are reports of division in the Stormers camp. Some players are reportedly in favour of Skinstad as captain, while another group would prefer Krige. Many feel that Krige had done a good job and did not deserve to be overlooked.

But it is a fact that Skinstad has a good relationship with Solomons. Skinstad should also prove that he has fully recovered from his knee injury and naming him as captain could cause further division in the team.

Krige will, however, lead WP in the Currie Cup again later this season. Province coach Gert Smal has made it clear he has been happy with Krige's leadership and sees no need to change.

Reacting to speculation about Skinstad leading the Stormers, Smal told Rapport: "Both have excellent leadership abilities. Corne, as well as Bobby, have made it clear in the past that they don't mind who of the two captains the team.

"Corne did well last season as captain and under his leadership we won the Currie Cup. As far as I'm concerned, Corne will lead WP again, barring injury, of course."
