Rassie demands confident approach
January 17, 2001

Cats captain Rassie Erasmus feels South African teams now have enough experience and talent to beat the best sides in the Super 12 and should have a more positive approach.

The Springbok flank told Beeld that local teams must stop saying they want to finish just under the top four in the Super 12. He said local sides must get themselves into positions that they do not need luck to reach the semifinals.

After Erasmus had been named as Cats captain on Tuesday for the third year in the row, there was speculation that Vos could lose the Springbok captaincy. Vos could be under pressure to retain his place as No 8 with the return of Erasmus and Stormers' Bob Skinstad.

Erasmus, however, does not agree. "Although Laurie Mains has not spoken to me, it is understandable that he wants to give Andre Vos, captain of the Lions and the Springboks, a rest. There is no doubt that Vos is a good captain," he said.

Erasmus is optimistic about the Cats' chances this year and feels they could win some of their overseas fixtures.

"It is my third year as captain and we have most of last season's squad intact. We had a very young team with little Super 12 experience last season. With Laurie Mains and Gysie Pienaar as coaches, we have for the first time some continuity with our coaching staff as well," he told the Supersport website.

"I am confident that we have planned everything well and that everything with gel together when we all meet in Johannesburg on Thursday."
