Doc Venter hangs up his boots
South Africa

World Cup winner Brendan Venter has decided to retire from the game at just 31. The centre, who had a highly acclaimed stint with London Irish before returning to South Africa to try to win a place in the Springbok World Cup squad in 1999, said he had decided to quit while he was ahead. Venter failed to win a Super 12 place last season with Western Province and although he was being tipped to win a centre berth with the Natal Sharks this season he has decided to call it a day. He plans to return to his profession as a doctor and continue to coach his local side Strand League. Venter was a member of the victorious 1995 World Cup side appearing as a substitute in the final and then made the 1999 squad but was unfortunately sent off against Uraguay. "I'm not injured and I have a lot to look back on and be happy about. It's time to get on with my other career," he said. |
