Mains backs Ludeke for bright future

Cats supremo Laurie Mains has tipped Frans Ludeke as a future Springbok coach.

"Frans is an astute rugby brain. You should be pushing for your next Springbok coach. Once he has settled in at the Lions during the Vodacom Cup, I will use him for some of the work with the Super 12 squad," Mains told Supersport zone.

Ludeke assisted Bok coach Harry Viljoen with the midweek team during their tour of Argentina and England and Wales last year. He and Eugene Eloff will share the coaching duties during the Vodacom Cup.

Mains, who arrived in South Africa on Thursday, said he was happy with the fitness of the Cats players. "They were tested on Wednesday morning and are in much better condition than at this stage last season.

"We will work hard with the 32 or 33 players in the squad during the next month then I will select my final 26. There is some real competition which is healthy," Mains said.

He predicted a tough Super 12. "The Auckland Blues are definitely stronger than last season, and so are the Chiefs. The Highlanders are as strong as ever, and the Hurricanes, with all their stars, will give everybody a run for their money."
