Otto to sue SARFU
January 24, 2001

Former Springbok Krynauw Otto is in the process of suing Sarfu after being forced to retire due to injury last year. He is believed to be asking for about R5 million in damages.

According to Supersport Zone, the lock's action concerns events during last year's Tri-Nations tour to Australia when he was sent home after it was discovered he was suffering from bleeding on the brain. Otto confirmed he was "considering" lodging a case against Sarfu. He said he believed notice of his intention had been delivered to the union.

Otto was declared fit to play in the Nelson Mandela Plate match in Melbourne in July last year despite being concussed after he had received a bump to the head during the Test against England in Bloemfontein.

It was later discovered that he had bleeding on the brain and the 29-year-old has been forced to retire. It is believed his claim is based on the amount he might have earned had his career not been cut short.

He is expected to sue Sarfu, the Springbok medical team and any other party who may have been negligent. "Sarfu are responsible for appointing a competent medical team so they would have a case to answer," Otto told Supersport Zone.
