WP may buy Stormers franchise
January 24, 2001

The Stormers are exploring the possibility of a deal similar to that at the Sharks where Natal acquired the franchise from Border and Eastern Province.

Boland and the SWD Eagles have exercised their right to host a match rather than sell them. The Stormers will play the Reds in George on April 7 and the Sharks in Wellington on May 12. The Sharks deal means that Natal will host all the region's home matches for the next two years.

Eagles manager Kevin Ferreira told the Cape Times it would make sense for his union to consider a similar deal to that at the Sharks if Western Province make then an offer. "I believe it's something we should look at.

"It's not nice to get together as a union and handle conflict all the time. But the deal must be viable," he said.

The unions will discuss the issue at a meeting on June 15. Meanwhile, Boland president Jackie Abrahams has said his union are still open to negotiations to sell the Stormers' home game against the Sharks.
