Stormers captain Corne Krige says his troops are ready to break New Zealand's stranglehold on the Super 12 competition.

Since the inception of the tournament in 1996, New Zealand teams have won it all five times, with the Auckland Blues (1996 & 1997) and Canterbury Crusaders (1998 - 2000) dominating. But Krige is confident they have the team to pull off the win this time around.

He has been particularly impressed by the work the youngsters have put in during the training sessions. "I'm already excited about this year," he told Die Burger. "The couple of times when the youngsters have been asked to show what they have, they really made us older and more established guys pay. And that's exactly what I expect. They can't hold back and must show what they have.

"They now have they opportunity to show off their talent and it's a chance that must be used. I'm convinced that we will enter this tournament with a couple of new faces. It's good competition and helps the team stay focussed."

Krige laughed at comments by teammate Bob Skinstad that the Stormers must win three of their four away matches this year. "It's a bit stiff, but nothing's impossible. We must just start the year on a good note against the Cats. That will give us the necessary confidence we need to take on the overseas sides.

"It will be tough, but it will come down to whether we utilise our opportunities or not. We can't have another situation like last year when we lost points by drawing to the Bulls at Newlands. That really hurt us and we can't let it happen again," he said.
