Otto may settle
January 26, 2001

Former Springbok lock Krynauw Otto and the South African Rugby Football Union could settle a potential legal battle out of court.

Otto was forced to retire last year after suffering bleeding from the brain. He is likely to lodge a claim of R5 million against Sarfu for potential loss of income.

As a senior Bok player he was earning about R45 000 per Test. His Blue Bulls contract is believed to be worth more than R1 million.

A legal adviser told the Business Day: "To avoid negative publicity (the case) will probably be settled out of court." The adviser said that if the matter went to court, Bok team doctor Frans Verster could be the first respondent and Sarfu the second.

The lock's action concerns events during last year's Tri-Nations tour to Australia when he was sent home after it was discovered he was suffering from bleeding on the brain. He had been declared fit to play in the Nelson Mandela Plate match in Melbourne in July last year, despite being concussed after he received a bump to the head during the Test against England in Bloemfontein in June.

It was later discovered that he had bleeding on the brain and the 29-year-old was forced to retire.
