Concern over Springbok contracts
January 29, 2001

There is reportedly unhappiness in Springbok ranks over their new contracts with the SA Rugby Football Union after some players' salaries were cut by two-thirds.

The SA Rugby Players' Association have asked for an urgent meeting with Sarfu to discuss the matter as some players said they did not get the chance to discuss the contacts with their advisers. Some players got pay cuts while others received increases.

Sarpa chief executive Piet Heymans told Supersport Zone that he would be seeking a meeting with Sarfu "to put in place a better process than this".

Bok coach Harry Viljoen last week contracted 30 players for the duration of the Super 12, with Breyton Paulse set to sign on the dotted line upon his return from the Sevens World Cup.

"The way this (the signing of the contracts) was done is unacceptable," said Heymans. "If players are perceived to have been forced to sign contracts it can only lead to trouble."

According to Die Burger, players were called in individually by Springbok coach Harry Viljoen and informed what salary they would be earning this year. The players were given copies of the contracts and encouraged to sign the documents to ensure payment at the end of the month.

Some players said Viljoen had suggested they should not involve their agents and lawyers. He told them that Sarfu and the players "were one big family" and all problems would be solved.

Die Burger said some of the players questioned the leadership of captain Andre Vos. They felt he should have insisted that the players get a chance to study the contracts.

An agent said some clauses in the contracts could lead to problems as it might affect existing agreements with other parties.
