Visagie hearing continues
January 31, 2001

The disciplinary hearing of Springbok prop Cobus Visagie, who returned a positive dope test last October, will continue in Cape Town on Wednesday.

Two days had initially been set aside for the hearing that started on Monday, but lengthy arguments caused proceedings to be adjourned at 6pm on Tuesday. It will resume at 10am on Wednesday.

Although closing arguments are expected to be over by 1pm, it could be up to a week before judgement is passed. The hearing is being chaired by Judge Edwin King and the other members of the panel are attorney Piet Niemann and Dr Shuaib Manjera.

Unacceptably high levels of nandrolone were found in a urine sample Visagie supplied after Western Province's 46-26 win over Boland in October last year. If it's found that he used an anabolic steroid, he will be banned from rugby for two years.

Visagie has maintained that the traces of the banned substance could only have got into his system through supplements that were supplied to him by the Stormers and Springbok medical staff. - Sapa
