Scare for the Stormers
January 31, 2001

Stormers captain Corne Krige needed three X-rays after he injured his neck in a contact training session before getting the all clear on Tuesday.

"I was very worried at the hospital when I have the X-rays taken. It was even more worried when I was called back three times for X-rays. But I got the assurance that everything was okay," he told Die Burger.

"I kept expecting the worst because my neck was so sore and uncomfortable. A neck injury is always a worrying thing. It can end a career. But it will just be a bit stiff and sore for the next few days."

Krige will not participate in any practice sessions until Monday, when he will he checked out again. He will still attend the Stormers' warm-up game against the Eagles at George on Friday night.

Krige injured his neck during a maul at the end of the session at Brookside. "I was trapped between two players when my neck got hurt. I immediately told Solly (coach Alan Solomons) and he called the doctor.

Solomons said he was not taking any chances with Krige as he was an important part of his plans for the season. "I can understand why he was so worried," he said.

"Especially if you look at how many injuries he has suffered during his career. I regard him as one of the bravest players that I know. The way he has fought back from all his setbacks is remarkable."
