John Eales has called for caution as the expansion of the Super 12 competition is discussed this week.

The Wallaby captain supports an extra team from the current competing nations, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia, being brought in but was concerned about suggestions that teams from South America or the USA could enter the competition.

"I just think if you are going to do something like that you've got to be sure of where the teams are coming from and the strength and you've got to be sure that it will add to the competition," he said.

"What we have now is a great product in the Super 12, it's a product that has gone across the board and attracted a lot of non-rugby followers."

Eales will lead the Queensland Reds again this year in the Super 12, possibly for the last time. He has said he will consider his position at the end of what he hopes will be a successful season for the Reds.
