SARFU to pay top stars
February 7, 2001

The South African Rugby Football Union are planning to contract the Super 12 players and lessen the burden on the unions.

Sarfu chief executive Rian Oberholzer told the Cape Times they will pay for the Super 12 and international contracts and the unions will be responsible for the provincial costs from next year.

Sarfu are discussing the matter with the 14 unions and the South African Rugby Players' Association and hope to have agreement by April. At the moment, the provinces are responsible for the players' salaries.

"The benefit is that provinces won't have huge financial swords hanging over their necks. The smaller unions will even be able to sign Springbok players for the Currie Cup, as they will only have to pay the provincial part of their contracts," Oberholzer said.

Sarfu are also planning to restructure the domestic programme. The Currie Cup will start in February, allowing the Boks to play in the competition. The Super 12 and Vodacom Cup will start in July. Oberholzer will discuss the issue of shifting the Super 12 with his Sanzar counterparts.
