Bok concerns solved
February 12, 2001

Springbok coach Harry Viljoen is positive that the problem areas in the new national contracts have been solved after a meeting with the players and their agents in Johannesburg on Sunday.

The South African Rugby Football Union have agreed to change some details concerning the commercial clauses in the contracts. The players' agents had been worried that these clauses could lead to problems as it might affect existing agreements with other parties concerning endorsements and public appearances.

The controversial dismissal clause was apparently not discussed and will stay in place. The clause that means a player's contract can be terminated after 30 days' notice had resulted in a war of words between Sarfu and the SA Rugby Players' Association.

"The agents had legitimate concerns and our meeting was about finding solutions for the players. I believe that once there are open lines of communication, grey areas became very clear. In the past there had been a lot of misinformation," Viljoen told the Cape Times.

The meeting formed part of Viljoen's second national workshop and the issues would be looked at again in two weeks' time.
