Harry: Solly has to pick Percy at 10
February 14, 2001

Springbok coach Harry Viljoen will not consider Percy Montgomery at flyhalf if he does not play in the position in the Super 12 this season.

Viljoen said it is important that Montgomery gets game time at flyhalf for the Stormers. "If that is not going to happen then I can't use him in that position during the Tests later this year," he told Die Burger. Viljoen would not speculate on what his other options would be.

The Bok coach said he understood the position Stormers coach Alan Solomons was in, but was still hoping he would consider Montgomery at flyhalf. "We are still talking about it. He has assured me that if he has an opportunity to play Percy at flyhalf, he will do that."

Solomons, who is believed to favour Montgomery at fullback, said he is still wrestling with the request. "I want to help, but I still haven't decided when I can use Percy at flyhalf in the Super 12."

Meanwhile, Breyton Paulse has also entered the debate. He told the Cape Times that he would prefer Montgomery at fullback.

"We have played together for a couple of years now and it has fruitful. It's for the coaches to decide, but my personal opinion is that I'd like to see Percy at the back."
