Nkanunu wants all-SA final
February 14, 2001

Sarfu president Silas Nkanunu has stated the need for South African sides to be among the top teams when this year's Vodacom Super 12 campaign reaches the second phase.

Nkanunu was speaking at the official launch of the Sanzar tournament at Vodaworld in Midrand on Tuesday, and argued that there was no reason why there couldn't be an all-South African final come May. He said the country has the necessary structures in place and the days of mediocrity are something of the past.

"I would love to see two of our sides playing in the final," he said. "This is the sixth Super 12 season and our teams' mediocre performances won't be accepted anymore.

"We must start showing some urgency, because South African rugby has everything needed to be successful. We have the players, knowledge and structures and we must use this to achieve the desired results. It's a challenge that awaits each of our four teams."

Bok coach Harry Viljoen echoed Nkanunu's statements, although he said he would be happy if two of the South African sides reach the last four. He added that he would also like to see the players improve their skills and approach to the games.
