Stormers eye Sephaka

Stormers coach Alan Solomons could see his front row problems solved with the news that Springbok prop Lawrence Sephaka might join the Cape-based team.

Sephaka, who toured with the national side to Argentina, the United Kingdom and Ireland at the end of last season, has been shifted down the Cats' pecking order by former All Black coach Laurie Mains.

The 22-year-old Falcons star, who can play on either side of the scrum, finds himself behind Willie Meyer, Baksteen Nell, Pietman van Niekerk and Heindrich Kok, and has already been told by Mains he won't be in the reckoning for a spot against the Stormers on Saturday.

According to South African Rugby Football Union (Sarfu) chief executive Rian Oberholzer, it is vital for the contracted Bok players to hone their skills in the demanding Super 12. "If any of the contracted players in the national squad won't be getting game time in the Super 12, we will move them," he told the Cape Times.

"Lawrence is a player under discussion. If he is not a regular at the Cats, it will be to the benefit of South African rugby if we move him to another region," he added.

However, Sephaka's move will only happen if Stormers and Bok tighthead Cobus Visagie is found guilty of using banned substances. The powerful front rower faces a two-year ban if convicted, although there was still no word on a verdict on Monday.

Solomons, who is already without the injured Toks van der Linde, would welcome the opportunity to have another Bok in his set-up, although he did leave the promising Carel van der Merwe out of his squad for the Cats game and overseas leg of the Super 12.

The Ulster-bound coach was loath to discuss the possible move of Sephaka on Monday. "It's premature to comment. I intend finalising the squad tomorrow (Wednesday)," he said.

Meanwhile, it is believed that Cats utility-back Conrad Jantjes may also move to another region. The SA under-23 star, who is still stuggling with a hamstring injury, could join the Bulls after the exciting Gavin Passens was ruled out for the entire tournament.

Jantjes, who was recently awarded a national contract, might have limited chances at the Cats, something that will not help his national aspirations. Springbok coach Harry Viljoen told the Cape Times on Monday he would like to see both Jantjes and Sephaka get some Super 12 game time.

"I believe both Lawrence and Conrad have the potential to play international rugby and I would like to see them get regular game time in the Super 12 at any of the regions."
