Meyer gets mains SOS
February 20, 2001

Veteran centre Eugene Meyer has been sent a SOS by Cats coach Laurie Mains to help ease the Johannesburg-based side's midfield problems.

Meyer, who captained the Falcons in almost 100 matches, joined the Lions this year, but was not included in Mains's original Super 12 squad. His call-up comes as a result of first-choice centres Japie Mulder and Grant Esterhuizen struggling with injuries ahead of the opener against the Stormers at Newlands.

Esterhuizen suffered a shoulder injury in a warm-up match against the Sharks a fortnight ago, while Mulder has not played since hurting his groin and calf muscle on the Boks' year-end tour last season.

The Cats got further bad news on Monday when Springbok hooker Delaray du Preez was ruled out of the Super 12 with an elbow injury. He faces surgery to remove cartilage from the troublesome elbow on Tuesday.
