WP ease past Leopards
February 24, 2001

Fedsure Western Province claimed a 36-23 victory in a tough, potentially awkward Vodacom Cup fixture against the Leopards - managing to secure a bonus point with a fourth try.

Leopards flyhalf Pieter Jordaan opened the home team's account with a pair of first half penalties and the home side's defence held up impressively to limit the visitors to a single first half try from left win Egon Seconds.

WP playmaker Werner Greef also landed a pair of penalties to give the visitors an 11-6 halftime lead.

Province made the game safe within ten minutes of the restart, however, when outside centre Jean de Villiers and right wing Nico Alberts both crossed for tries which Greef converted to give the visitors the sort of cushion they expected.

Lock Ryno van der Merwe was on to hand to plunge over the line in a move that turned the tables nicely on the talented Province backline players, who had benefited from the forwards' hard work for the first three scores.

Leopards fans had plenty to cheer about themselves, too, with left wing Henno Mentz showing an astonishing turn of speed to race past three WP defenders for a simple score midway through the second period.

When Jordaan added another penalty, the gap was 14 points and hopes of a comeback flickered briefly until WP replacement flyhalf Yazeed Manual kicked two penalties in the final quarter to seal a deserved victory.

With Province secure in victory and waiting patiently for the final whistle, Leopards replacement wing Patrick Pietersen sprinted home for a consolation score that narrowed the margin of defeat.

Scorers:

Leopards - Tries: Henno Mentz, Patrick Pietersen; Penalties: Pieter Jordaan (3); Conversions: Jordaan (2).

WP - Tries: Egon Seconds, Jean de Villiers, Nico Alberts, Ryno van de Merwe; Penalties: Werner Greef (2), Yazeed Manual (2); Conversions: Greef (2).
