Stormers want justice
February 26, 2001

Stormers centres De Wet Barry and Robbie Fleck are furious with Japie Mulder after his off-the-ball charge broke up their partnership in the Super 12 this season.

The Cats midfielder fractured Barry's cheekbone in their opening Super 12 game at Newlands on Saturday. Barry faces at least six weeks out of rugby and Mulder will appear before a Sarfu disciplinary hearing on Monday.

"I would like to see justice done," Barry told the Cape Times. "If the reason for this was that I had executed a fair tackle on Japie moments before, then he is a very poor sportsman. It was just a charge on me, not even a tackle."

"I'm also disappointed in Japie. South African teams should be helping each other get to the top. Instead, all they want to do is nail each other. Maybe this is a culture they have cultivated up north.

"They should realise that people come to stadiums to watch rugby, not to see that kind of thing. I worked hard before the season and now I must start all over again."

Fleck was just as angry. "What he did is unforgivable. He messed up mine and De Wet's season and I won't forgive him for that," he told Die Burger. "I haven't practised with Stuart (Abbott) or Werner (Greeff) and I don't know if we can still do that."

Mulder does not believe he did anything wrong. "If this is what rugby is becoming, a game for 'slapgatte', then it is a sad day for South African rugby," he said. "Rugby is a contact sport and these things happen."

"I didn't intentionally try to hurt Barry. Fleck threw a dummy and I thought he was passing the ball and tackled Barry.

"I'm not sure if my shoulder connected with his cheekbone or jaw. There was nothing malicious about my tackle."
