Brumbies head into hostile territory
February 26, 2001

Despite scoring 51 points against Super 12 champions Canterbury at the weekend, Brumbies coach Eddie Jones wants more improvement for Saturday's clash against the Sharks in Durban.

The prospect of meeting the Sharks at home does not excite Jones, particularly as the Brumbies are yet to record a victory in the seaside town. But while the team has had little success, several individuals have fond memories of Kings Park.

Stirling Mortlock secured the Tri-Nations title for Australia last year with a final-minute sideline conversion against South Africa. He and several other Brumbies team-mates will be hoping for similar success, including flyhalf Stephen Larkham. The Wallaby missed last Friday's demolition of the Crusaders in Canberra due to a hamstring strain, but Jones said he was hopeful Larkham would return to the field this weekend.

"We've got a medical review here and Stephen will have a run to show us where he is at," Jones told AAP from Durban. "He's obviously a pretty handy player to have back because we're anticipating this will be one of the toughest games of the year for us."

The Sharks are not quite the powerhouse side they used to be, but Jones is not taking any chances and is desperate to come through unscathed with the more imposing prospect of the Cats waiting in Johannesburg a week later.

"We've never won at these two venues so this is a really big challenge for us," Jones said. "We really have to work hard and we have to start with the Sharks, who are playing very physical rugby. We know we've got to improve on what we did against Canterbury."

The only other injury concern for the Brumbies is three-quarter James Holbeck with a groin problem.
