Japie wants an apology

Japie Mulder is demanding an apology from Stormers coach Alan Solomons for describing the Cats player's tackle on De Wet Barry as "thuggery".

Stormers centre De Wet Barry suffered a fractured cheekbone after an off-the-ball tackle in their Super 12 game at Newlands last Saturday. After the match, Solomons said: "From what I could see of it, it looked deliberate". He called for an 18-month ban on Mulder.

Mulder's legal representative Frikkie Erasmus told the Cape Times: "We will be sending Alan Solomons a letter of demand for a written apology."

Erasmus said that it had been ruled at the disciplinary hearing on Monday that Barry's injury had caused by an accidental clash of heads. Mulder received an effective two-match ban.

Erasmus said video evidence had proved there was nothing malicious about the tackle. "Japie is very upset about the things he has been called and, of course, is sorry that De Wet had been hurt," he said.
