Jacobs must stop Umaga

Young centre Adrian Jacobs has the unenviable task of keeping hard-running midfielder Tana Umaga in check when the Bulls take on the Hurricanes in a Super 12 game in Wellington on Saturday.

Bulls coach Phil Pretorius has promoted the young Falcons star from the substitutes' bench. Jacobs went on the field as a substitute in Friday night's defeat against the Sharks in Durban and was yellow-carded.

However, he showed some deft touches during his short stint on the field. He was a strong contender for a place in the starting line-up against the Sharks after impressing the coach with his skills on the short pre-season tour to Fiji.

The coach, however, opted for the midfield combination of Franco Smith and Danie van Schalkwyk. The former moves from inside centre to flyhalf in place of Boeta Wessels, with Van Schalkwyk moving infield to accommodate Jacobs.

Pretorius feels there is a need for more pace among his backs and has also included Wynand Lourens at wing in place of the strong McNeil Hendricks, who was substituted at halftime during the Sharks game. Marius Goosen took his place, but now preference is given to Lourens, who had recovered from a hamstring injury.

In the final change to the starting line-up, Pierre Uys gets a chance to start in place of Springbok Johan Wasserman.

Bulls team: Casper Steyn; Wynand Lourens, Adrian Jacobs, Danie van Schalkwyk, Friederich Lombard; Franco Smith, Joost van der Westhuizen (capt); Anton Leonard, Pierre Uys, Nicky van der Walt, Victor Matfield, Braam Els, Johan Human, Naka Drotské, Frikkie Bosman. Substitutes: Jannie Brookes, Gunder Williamson, Ralf Schroeder, Johan Wasserman, Marius Goosen, McNeil Hendricks, Hakkies Husselman.
