Sharks get new wings
March 2, 2001

The Sharks starting line-up for Saturday's crunch game against the Brumbies at the Absa Stadium in Durban shows four changes to the one that beat the Bulls last Friday.

The Sharks tackle the Brumbies with two new wings in Stephen Brink and Western Province flyer Gus Theron. The latter, who replaces the injured Stefan Terblanche, prefers centre, but has played with success at wing for Province in the Currie Cup.

Coach Rudolph Straeuli promoted another speed ace, Stephen Brink, to Vodacom Super 12 duty in place of Justin Swart, who was a big disappointment against the Bulls.

Brink played for the Natal Wildebeest in the curtain-raiser and exhibited his speed in a 50m-run to the tryline against the Griffons. The former Free Stater had a lot of chances at Vodacom Super 12 and Bankfin Currie Cup level, but hasn't lived up to the big reputation with which he arrived in Durban.

With Springbok Sevens player Rodger Smith breathing down his neck, Brink knows it's time for him to start producing the goods. Swart has been selected at fullback for the Wildebeest, who are travelling to Wellington for a Vodacom Cup game against the Boland Kavaliers on Sunday.

Springbok World Cup Sevens captain Warren Britz is in the starting line-up in place of the injured Warren Brosnihan. The latter got a bump against the head against the Bulls and gets a break.

His absence led to a positional switch for AJ Venter, who moves to No 8 to accommodate Britz at the side of the scrum. The fourth change sees Springbok Etienne Fynn returning to the starting line-up in place of the suspended Brent Moyle.

Border Bulldogs prop Deon Carstens slots in on the bench after he was called up to the Sharks camp this week. As expected, Springbok stars Gaffie du Toit and Andre Snyman will start on the bench. Both are in the throes of a comeback effort after injuries, but they should get game time on Saturday.

Sharks: Ricardo Loubser; Gus Theron, Deon Kayser, Trevor Halstead, Stephen Brink; Butch James, Craig Davidson; AJ Venter, Charl van Rensburg, Warren Britz, Mark Andrews (capt), Albert van den Berg, Etienne Fynn, John Smit, Ollie le Roux. Substitutes: Lukas van Biljon, Deon Carstens, Philip Smit, Brad Macleod-Henderson, Gaffie du Toit, Andre Snyman.
