Falcons beaten in Brakpan

The Lions spoilt the Falcons' farewell to Brakpan with a 34-33 victory in a Vodacom Cup Section X match on Friday night.

Home fullback Dawie du Toit - who had kicked seven out of nine previous attempts at goal - missed a last kick penalty attempt that would have given his side a golden farewell before their move to Kempton Park.

The Lions had only taken their winning lead two minutes previously when replacement Jorrie Muller scored their fourth try after they had claimed and lost the lead in the previous five minutes.

They had only overhauled the Falcons 23-point halftime advantage in the final ten minutes when Jaco Booysen's try was converted by flyhalf Andre Pretorius.

The lead was snatched back by Falcons' wing Turtius Douw, who scored his side's third try in an almost immediate reply before Muller's equally hasty intervention. It completed a fine drama that had its fair share of other incident.

Former Springbok hooker James Dalton was yellow-carded in the first half on his Falcons debut after punching his opposite number Michael Laubscher in the eye - Laubscher was wearing Dalton's old white and red No 2 jersey.

With Laubscher having one eye closed he also had to leave the field, meaning that the Van der Walt brothers - Danie (Falcons) and James (Lions) - opposed each other at hooker for the first time since schooldays.

With floodlight trouble a constant feature, culminating in their complete failure as the drama reached its peak, it was an unforgettable farewell to Brakpan.

Lions - Tries: Gcobani Bobo, Russel Winter, Jaco Booysen, Johan Muller; Cons: Andre Pretorius 4; Pens: Pretorius 2
