Sharks shock the Brumbies
March 3, 2001

The Sharks produced a determined defensive display to see off tournament favourites the Brumbies 17-16 at Absa Stadium in Durban on Saturday.

The South Africans saw off wave after wave of Brumbies' attacks in the final minutes to win their second consecutive match after beating the Bulls last week.

In fairness to the Australians, it wasn't their best performance in recent years, with their usually slick handling letting them don on several occasions. Also, they seemed bereft of ideas on certain occasions, with Wallaby flyhalf Stephen Larkham still on the sidelines recovering from injury.

After both kickers - Butch James and Stirling Mortlock - missed some relatively easy attempts at goal early on, it was No 8 AJ Venter who barged over for the first try.
