Saracens get De Beer in
March 5, 2001

South African fly-half Jannie de Beer has signed with Zurich Premiership club Saracens on a two and a half month trial.

The 29-year-old international has 13 caps for South Africa and has scored 181 test points. He will be known by English supporters for his record breaking drop goal display against them in the 1999 World Cup.

"Jannie is a wonderful player and a fantastic goal kicker" says Francois Pienaar, Saracens Chief Executive.

"Given the situation that Thomas Castaignede is out of action through injury, and the problems that arose when Tim Horan and Duncan McRae were injured at the same time, we wanted to ensure that we go into the Zurich Championship Play Offs in the strongest position possible" he continues.

"Jannie was being approached by various Super 12 sides, but expressed an interest in coming to the UK. We saw an opportunity and took it" says Pienaar. "He is on a two and a half month trial at very little cost and with little effect on the wage cap, we very much look forward to having him join our squad".
