Brumbies call up league recruit
March 7, 2001

The Brumbies will tackle the in-form Cats with their latest rugby league recruit Joel Wilson for Sunday morning's (AEDT) Super 12 clash in Johannesburg.

Wilson, a former Northern Eagles player, joins winger Damian McInally in the 22-man squad after the withdrawal of centre James Holbeck and utility winger Andrew Walker.

Holbeck has already returned to Canberra due to injury, as has Walker whose mother is critically ill. Wallaby flyhalf Stephen Larkham was earlier ruled out due to a hamstring problem.

"If everyone was fit, Wilson and McInally probably would not be playing," Brumbies coach Eddie Jones told AAP. "But they have both worked hard, they have a good skill level and are familiar with our patterns of play.

"I'm confident they will get the job done."

The Cats are undefeated after two rounds and after last weekend's thrashing of Highlanders have shortened to second favourites to win the title, behind the Brumbies.

"The Cats are big, strong and fast," Jones said. "Laurie Mains has them playing a conservative but effective style of rugby and they look very settled."

In a precaution to cover for further injury, the Brumbies have signed 23-year-old Australian Sevens winger Willie Gordon, from Randwick, for the next month.

Brumbies squad: Mark Bartholomeusz, Graeme Bond, Ben Darwin, Owen Finegan, George Gregan, Travis Hall, Justin Harrison, Rod Kafer, Damian McInally, Craig McMullen, Stirling Mortlock, Tom Murphy, Jeremy Paul, David Pusey, Joe Roff, Peter Ryan, Angus Scott, George Smith, Daniel Vickerman, Jim Williams, Joel Wilson, Bill Young.
