Sevens legend Waisale Serevi has stepped down as coach of the Fiji 7s team in order to pursue other interests.

"We met with Waisale today and after much discussion he said he felt it best that he resign as coach of the Digicel Fiji 7s team," FRU chief executive Timoci Tavanavanua said.

"In his subsequent resignation letter, he stated that he wanted to pursue other employment opportunities and wished FRU all the best."

Serevi took up his position as coach after the Rugby World Cup 7s triumph in 2005, leading the Digicel Fiji 7s team to success in the 2005-06 IRB World Series. Though the team finished runners-up this season, they did win the San Diego 7s and the Adelaide 7s.

"Serevi has given Fiji Rugby almost 20 years of outstanding service as a player, coach and rugby mentor," Tavanavanua said. "His contribution to rugby in this country can never be understated. I am sure he will remain an icon for all hopeful young players for many, many years to come."

"On behalf of everyone involved at the Fiji Rugby Union, I'd like to thank him sincerely for his unparalleled work in the game."
