The Currie Cup is South Africa's premier club competition and is one of the oldest tournaments in the world. In 1891 the touring British Isles awarded the Currie Cup to Griqualand West after they provided the sternest test for the tourists. The Cup had been given to the Lions by Sir Donald Currie, owner of the shipping company that had transported the squad to Africa.
Local unions battled for the Cup from 1892 onwards, with Western Province dominating, until a formal competition was introduced in 1968. In the current format the competition is split into two divisions, with the Premier Division, comprising the top eight sides, contesting the Currie Cup. The second division sides vie with each other for promotion into the Premier division.
