Wales and Saracens prop Rhys Gill admits he was surprised by Andy Farrell's decision to leave the club in recent days.

Farrell, who took on the defensive coaching duties during the Six Nations, left Saracens on Thursday after previously having turned down the chance to make the temporary appointment permanent following the tournament.

Mike Catt has now joined up with head coach Stuart Lancaster and forwards' coach Graham Rowntree and while Farrell will be in South Africa, he is only there to watch son Owen Farrell play.

"I was surprised about Andy," Gill said. "We were told he was staying and he was happy to stay. It was out of the blue, really."

Gill will now join up with the rest of the Welsh squad in Australia after he helped Wales to a 30-21 win over the Barbarians on Saturday and is aware how much playing for Saracens has helped his game.

"My game has come on loads since I joined Saracens. Playing in the Premiership week in, week out is really tough. You learn your trade. It's probably not as skilful as the Welsh game, but it is a really tough league."
