Ireland have received a welcome boost with the news loose-head Cian Healy is expected to be fit for Rugby World Cup duty.

The Leinster loose-head was told he required surgery on his neck after visiting a specialist last week. With such an injury the prognosis and the length of time out are ambiguous but Leinster have released an update saying: "Cian is due to start his rehab in two to three weeks and provided there are no issues, is expected to be fit for the Rugby World Cup."

Ireland's first World Cup warm-up is against Wales on August 8 and they complete their four-game schedule with a match against England at Twickenham on September 5. Their World Cup opener sees them play Canada on September 19 and Leinster skills coach Richie Murphy is reluctant to put a time-frame on when Healy will be fit to return but is optimistic he will be fit and firing for Ireland duty come August/ September.

"It's hard to put a firmer time-frame on it. But they're happy that the process went well. The relief; he's got some relief out of that already, and once he gets into the rehab side of it, we'll get a better idea of how long. They're very confident that he'll be back before the World Cup."
