Free practice 2

Welcome back to the Circuit de Catalunya and Friday's second practice session for the Spanish Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton was fastest in first practice, ahead of Jenson Button and Michael Schumacher.

As always if you have any questions or want to make any observations, you can send them through by clicking here

There is a big grey cloud over the circuit which could cause a few problems later on, but at the moment the circuit is dry. Track temperature is up to 26C, so much better conditions for F1 cars at the moment.

Random news from Toro Rosso as the cars head out on track: "No problems in morning session. Briatorelookalike walking down paddock. Yummy new ice cream machine in our hospitality!"

Both Saubers are out first, de la Rosa's gearbox problem from FP1 has been fixed.

Alongside new Burger King sponsorship Sauber is also running an F-duct inlet on the same part of the car (in front of the cockpit) as McLaren does. I will keep an eye on the speed-trap figures to let you know if it makes a difference.

Kobayashi immediately sets a time of 1:23.197.

Sutil told to watch out for a bit of a head wind down the main straight by Force India. Windy conditions can often play a part in Barcelona, especially in the high-speed turn 9.

Mercedes' Nick Fry says he hopes his team has closed the gap with its new updates. Adds that everything went to plan this morning but "can't guarantee" Mercedes will leapfrog any of the teams in front.

Adrian Sutil comes off the track at turn nine, maybe a mistake under the crosswinds up there. The car is fine and he rejoins the circuit.

Petrov is the fastest man on track but Schumacher is just heading out. Kubica breaks into the 1:21s in his Renault.

Schumacher makes a small lock up and is slightly delayed picking up the throttle. There is probably still a few niggles to be ironed out with set-up on that updated Mercedes.

Now Schumacher is going faster than anyone in sectors one and two... and sets a 1:21.322, faster than his time from this morning's session.

Massa is out on track with the F-duct engine cover fitted.

Schumacher back in the garage after four laps, that could well ahve been a low fuel run on those hard tyres.

Button is 0.196 off Schumacher at the moment. Hamilton, Alonso, Webber and Vettel yet to set a time.

Webber is now winding up for a fast lap ... and goes quickest with a 1:21.272.

Alonso is out on track to the delight of the home fans.

That dark cloud might be passing now. Virgin reports: "Sun! Excellent :-) Lucas seems quite happy with the car, maybe a bit of a change needed with the slow speed balance."

Hamilton goes second quickest - 0.242 off Webber and 0.017 faster than Schumacher.

Vettel's Red Bull is sliding underneath him as he gets his tyres up to temp.

Big accident for Hulkenberg. red Red Flag. He ran wide out of turn 9 but kept his foot down and the rear end came round on him. He then slewed across the track and buried it in the opposite tyre wall. The nose of the car has been completely wiped off and that is the end of his Friday.

So a brief respite while the car is recovered. Everybody is back in the pits having a look at the replays and analysing their own data.

The car is being lifted away now, we should be back in business quite soon.

Replays show black pieces of, what looks like, carbon fibre coming off a Ferrari and a Red Bull as they ran a bit wide in turn 9.

The delay could be quite a bit longer as we see the tyre wall being replaced. It's not a place where you would expect an accident so the marshals are having to patch it up.

Ferrari update us on the piece that came off Alonso's car: "Something to be repaired on the rear of Fernando's car after he jumped a bit heavily on a kerb, nothing major anyway."

Remember, you can add your thoughts or ask question by clicking here.

Chandhok is complaining about problems with the rear of his car. He says it feels as though there is something wrong with it. He had to sacrafice his Friday morning practice to Christian Klien earlier, so this is the first time he has got his hands on the updated HRT.

green We've got cars back on track now.

Hulkenberg is absolutely fine after that shunt according to Williams: "Nico's been to the medical centre and has been given the all clear."

Liuzzi is one of the first out for a quick run on soft tyres: "Adrian out again on the hard tyres for an 8 lap run. Tonio leaving for 3 laps on options," says Force India.

Rather impressively Chandhok is the fastest through the speed trap at 308 KPH. But is matched by Kobayashi and team-mate Senna. The fastest in the morning sessions were the Ferraris at 310 KPH.

Alonso comes up behind and passes a Virgin but is over a second off the best time in the first sector as a result.

Vettel is lapping over a second off his team-mate but neither have tried a soft tyre run yet. Massa, however, has gone out on the option tyres.

Williams have got Hulkenberg's car back to the pits so at least they will be able to start work on its repairs.

Massa sets the second fastest time on the soft tyres. 0.239 off Webber. Vettel gets withing 0.620 of Webber on his last lap.

Vettel overtakes Sutil into turn nine, the Red Bull looked comfortable in the Force India's slipstream.

Webber is now on a soft-tyre run and is about to set his best time. He goes 0.888 quicker, which puts him over a second faster than Massa in second.

Schumacher is now out on a soft tyre run, expect a quick time from him.

The soft tyres are working well according to Force India's Liuzzi: "Tonio back in from soft tyre run. got caught in traffic on first lap but reports that the tyres are ok especially when warm."

Alonso is now heading out on softs, get ready for the times to tumble. Schumacher is up to second, 0.582 off Webber.

Parag's view on Schumacher this weekend: "It looks like the Schumacher of old is coming back. Seeing a fastest lap time is only going to push him on!! Qualifying is going to be interesting. Given that Nico is a very strong competitor and if he can drive with car spec a, he can definitely drive with car spec b, the race is going to be quite interesting."

Hulkenberg's car will be fine for Saturday practice: "Not a huge amount of chassis damage to the Hulk's tobogan, he won't make it out again today, but will be fine for tommorow" - Williams.

Meanwhile Barrichello is complaining of understeer in his Williams.

Alonso third fastest but off the pace of Schumacher on the same tyres. But remember, Ferrari often run heavy fuel on Fridays.

For those asking, we can't show live timings from the circuit as Formula One Management does not allow it.

Froggy asks what the weather will be like this weekend.

We're expecting rain tomorrow, not necessarily during the session and a drier Sunday. But there are no gaurantees as we were also expecting rain today.

Steven asks: "What are the speed traps telling us about the cars with the F-duct? Are they going a lot faster on the straights?"

The two McLarens are now fastest on 309 KPH but they are matched by the HRT of Chandhok who is not running an F-duct. So that would suggest McLaren still has the edge in that area.

Martin asks: "Can you tell if Rosberg and Schumacher are running different strategies, ie testing different set-ups? What is the time separating them?"

I'm not sure but as Neville says "it seems as if Nico has been a fraction behind all day". If we get an answer after the session, we'll make sure we get a story up on the website about it.

Petrov has run wide in turn three but keeps it going through the gravel. Just seemed to run out of grip.

A question from Deepak: "Do u think the Ferrari has lost any balance or advantage the previous car had by adding the F-duct upgrade to its car ? What can u say about the F-duct's testing for Ferrari through the free practice sessions? Are they quick enough overall, or not ?"

I think they are struggling to get it to work but they have the option of not running it and I would not be surprised if that is the route they take in qualifying. But they are often slower on Friday because they like to focus on race prep and then work on qualifying in Saturday morning practice. The question for me is how much have they R&D time have they sacraficed in the past three weeks as a result?

Back to the action and we have Vettel at the top of the timing sheets with a 1:19.965. He is 0.210 up on Webber and 0.792 up on Schumacher.

Alonso is 0.854 slower than Vettel and Hamilton (the fastest McLaren) is 1.254 off. But there might be faster times to follow for McLaren, they are just setting out on another soft tyre run.

Vettel's best time is just off the best set last year in qualifying by Rubens Barrichello in Q2.

Hamilton is harassing Barrichello and slips past into turn 10.

A big flat spot is visible on Hamilton's front left tyre. He is way off the pace at the moment but that is likely down to traffic.

mark asks: "Has Michael been consistently faster than Nico, in practice at any of the other tracks this year?"

He was faster in two practice sessions in Australia and one in Malaysia. But on the whole Rosberg has been quicker. Until now...

The times haven't changed too much in the last ten minutes and we only have six minutes to go, so we might be looking at the final order now.

Massa has reverted to running without an F-duct: "Felipe is back on track on soft tyres and standard rear wing."

Alguersuari has stopped on track in the Toro Rosso, bringing out a yellow flag. A lick of flames and some smoke from the back, that could be the end of that Ferrari engine.

Chandhok losing the rear end of his HRT again heading into turn 10. That car does not look easy to drive.

Mark: "It has been my impression that Ferrari knows that it is not in position to qualify well and instead works on race pace, or are they being a bit arrogant thinking that quali is their strong suit. What do you think?"

I think they have a way of operating where they allocate Friday for the race and Saturday for quali. It makes sense as the track is closer to how it will be in qualifying come third practice.

chequered The session ends with Vettel fastest and Webber second faster. Schumacher gets another confidence boost in third place.

Vettel - 1:19.965, Webber - 1:20.175, Schumacher - 1:20.757, Alonso - 1:20.819, Hamilton -1:21.191, Kubica 1:21.202.

So Red Bull look as dominant as expected while Schumacher has exceeded expectations (so far). Thank you to those that got in touch and apologies I didn't get a chance to answer all your questions. Make sure you join us tomorrow for final practice and that all-important qualifying session.
