Daniel Ricciardo admitted he is having to "try not to get too excited" about the Toro Rosso updates after Friday practice for the Spanish Grand Prix.

In FP2 both Toro Rossos were closely matched with Force India and ahead of McLaren, while Jean-Eric Vergne had been third fastest in the morning session. Ricciardo said the position was a result of the team's upgrades delivering what it had predicted and as a result he was trying not to get carried away after a strong day.

"Everyone seems to run pretty high downforce here, but I think generally it seems to be the updates are working," Ricciardo said. "Let's say the areas we found are good today - things like traction and braking - is where the team has really worked on, so I think we've improved where we expected to. I always try not to get too excited because we'll see what happens tomorrow but looking at just today it was definitely one of our better Fridays with both cars."

With Ricciardo doing his long run on the hard tyre and Vergne on the mediums, Ricciardo said the pace had been encouraging on both compounds.

"We both did some long runs; I think they were not too bad. We were pretty pleased looking at the competitors. It's hard to know with fuel as always, but I think generally for our Friday long runs we were quite happy. Some teams seemed to be quite good as well and others seemed to struggle quite a lot so I don't think everyone has optimised their performance or their package yet, but looking at just today we were pretty happy with short and long runs."
