Jacques Potgieter to leave Waratahs for Sharks

New South Wales Waratahs cult hero Jacques Potgieter will return to South Africa at the end of the season and join the Sharks on a two-year deal.

A key member of the Waratahs' breakthrough Super Rugby title in 2014, Potgieter's time in Sydney will come to an end at the completion of the Waratahs' 2015 campaign. The South African has been hugely popular among Waratahs fans, his uncompromising style often earning standing ovations from the Sydney faithful.

But the back-row enforcer has always been open about his desire to return home and he will now head back to Durban - the city where it all started.

"I am really looking forward to joining the Cell C Sharks. This is the place where I played all my junior rugby and where everything started for me," Potgieter said. "I have great memories of my time in Durban and I am keen to contribute to the team's ambitions in 2016."

The Sharks kicked off their Australasian tour at the weekend with a woeful display against the in-form Highlanders in Dunedin. The visitors were hammered 48-15 and will need to make some dramatic improvements if they are to be anything other than road-kill against the ladder-leading Hurricanes this weekend.

Potgieter's Waratahs, meanwhile, will be looking for revenge against Western Force in Perth after they suffered a shock loss to their Australian conference rivals in Sydney earlier this year.
