Springboks doctor Craig Roberts is confident that Duane Vermeulen will be fit for the Rugby World Cup after undergoing neck surgery.

The Stormers back-rower underwent the surgery in Durban on Wednesday after neck spasms had curtailed his Super Rugby season, and he faces a race against time to be fit for the World Cup in England from September 18 to October 31.

"The operation went well and we are grateful to the medical staff who looked after Duanem" Dr Roberts said. "The road to recovery is a long one, but we are confident that he can make it to the World Cup."

Springboks coach Heyneke Meyer has vowed the national team medical staff will work tirelessly to get the 2014 South African Rugby Player of the Year fit for the World Cup.

"Duane is a team man who has often played through the pain barrier and I know nothing will hold him back," Meyer said. "We will do everything possible to get him ready in time for the World Cup."
