Ryan Grant's hopes of playing at the Rugby World Cup will be determined by the results of X-Rays on his injured ankle.

The prop picked up the injury early in the second half of Scotland's 28-22 defeat to Ireland in Dublin, leaving the field on a stretcher.

Scotland head coach Vern Cotter was keeping an open mind after the match, but there is a real possibility the 29-year-old could miss next month's tournament.

"We don't know how he is yet: Ryan's had an X-Ray and we haven't had the results of that," said Cotter.

"We need to wait to be as accurate as we can on Ryan, and we can only wait and see at the moment."

Grant was not the only Scotland player to pick up a knock, with Fraser Brown suffering a hamstring issue and debutant Hugh Blake dislocating a finger.

"I think there were some good things and some things that we can work on," Cotter added.

"We definitely need to be more accurate at times, the intentions were good but we let Ireland score a couple of tries perhaps too easily.

"It's important to improve and that's what our focus is on now, just to improve on this game."
