Taniela "Tongan Thor" has re-signed with Queensland Reds through to the end of 2018.

The former schoolboy star joined the Reds straight out of school at the end of 2014 but failed to make his debut as Richard Graham and the coaching staff went about preparing him for senior rugby.

Tupou did feature in Queensland Premier Rugby with the Brothers club and then established himself in Queensland Country's squad for the National Rugby Championship.

He has since earned an upgrade to the Reds' senior squad for the 2016 Super Rugby season.

"I'm excited, I'm happy to knowing that I'm signing with the Reds until 2018," Tupou said.

"I just love being around with the boys; just love this place. I love Brisbane; the weather is similar to Tonga.

"If I'm good enough hopefully I'll get the chance to play Super Rugby."

Tupou's extension breaks a run of bad news for the Reds who have suffered setbacks in the form of injuries to star Wallabies James Slipper and Kane Douglas.

The Reds open their 2016 Super Rugby campaign against New South Wales Waratahs in Sydney on February 27.
