Newcastle Falcons climbed off the bottom of the Aviva Premiership table with a 26-14 defeat of Leicester Tigers at Kingston Park.

The hosts were the better side right from the off and seized control of the contest before half-time thanks to tries from Simon Hammersley and Adam Powell. Veteran fly-half Andy Goode converted both to give Newcastle a commanding 20-9 lead at the break.

Goode booted a third penalty in the second half to put the home side two converted tries in front of their visitors. However, Tigers sniffed a comeback with around 16 minutes to go as Laurence Pearce touched down.

Freddie Burns had kicked three early penalties -- to briefly give his side 6-0 and 9-7 leads -- but Pearce's score went unconverted, allowing 21-year-old fly-half Craig Willis to seal four points for the Falcons with a late penalty.

Victory ensures Newcastle climb up to 10th in the Premiership table, putting breathing space between them and both bottom club London Irish and 11th-placed Worcester.
