Hawke's Bay will be without prolific first five-eighth Matt Berquist for the rest of the Air NZ Cup rugby season after he broke a finger.

Berquist, who is the top scorer in the competition with 68 after six rounds, broke his left ring finger during Thursday's 18-14 defeat of Taranaki in Napier.

He had an operation on Friday and will be in a cast for 6-8 weeks.

Hawke's Bay captain and halfback Danny Lee also left the field with a hand injury in the 53rd minute and is expected to be sidelined for two weeks.

Winger Jason Kupa, who left the field with a calf injury, is expected to be fit for their match against Counties-Manukau at Pukekohe on Sunday.
