Time Score

10.00 Welcome to coverage of the first Test of Italy's visit to Australia and thanks for joining me, Jamie Allaway, for what will be a tough assignment for the visitors. Italy are coming off the back of a disappointing Six Nations, and little rugby since, but make a key change with Gower coming into the fly half position; it will be fascinating to see how the former Australian Rugby League player handles his compatriots on his debut. Geldenhuys also comes into the second row.

Australia bring in a couple of replacements with Robbie Deans starting at fullback and Dean Mumm replaces the injured Matt Hodgson in the back row. Australia have remained a very strong unit and Italy will have to take the game to them to compete. However, the recent alteration to the ELVs has reinstated the rolling maul, one of Italy's favoured weapons.

10.15 France have beaten New Zealand 22-27 and if that news has filtered down to the Italy dressing room, then the northern hemisphere success should get them fired up before the game.

10:30 The teams are walking out and we have the anthems in front of a reasonal crowd, if not quite a full house.

Italy to kick off, so Gower takes his first action as a Rugby Union international.

1

The kick off is cleaned up after a little bounce around and after an exchange of kicks, Italy go long and in goal. A long 22 leads to a further exhange, both sides just testing the other out here.

2

Italy throw in crooked and the first mistake of the game gives Australia possession, which is compounded when they collapse the scrum and Australia find touch deep in the 22. First real threat from either side.

3 5 - 0

TRY for O'Connor The 18 year-old on his first start finishes a neat try. Giteau releases Turner into space, who cuts through the Italian line and unselfishly gives the easy pass to O'Connor for a simple finish. Very well taken try by the Australians, but too easy and we could looking at a high score if the Italian defence performs like that.

4

The conversion bounces out off the post.

6

McLean finds touch in Australian territory, but they clear very neatly and push the Italians back, and regain possession from a poor Italian box kick.

8

We have the first rolling maul as the Italians win lineout ball, but they don't gain too much ground as the Australians hold well. However, Parisse takes it off the back and a series of rucks does take it into the Australian 22, before conceding a penalty for being offside chasing Gower's chip through.

10

Nice swinging passage of play, as Italy first take the ball up and then the Autralians counter, and eventually find deep territory with a kick over the Italian defence. On a more worrying note, Turner clashes horribly with Bergomasco as they both go for the ball, and hasn't moved for two minutes now. We'll have a delay now as he is treated, but good to see he has now managed to sit up.

11

The Italian forwards take the ball up well and compete up front, but as the ball is released to the backs, a horrible pass leads to a knock-on. The Italian side need to sharpen up their play across the field to get back into this game.

13

Spectacular kick from Giteau, who drives a booming flat ball from his own half, on the run, to within ten metres of the Italian line. Danger here for the Azurri, but they secure ball cleanly and a long box kick is knocked on by Mitchell to take them up field with possession.

15

The Italian forwards again look combative and move the ball forward, but the service from the scrum half is poor and they cannot create anything behind.

16

After a bit of backwards and forwards, Mitchell decides to upstage Giteau with an even longer kick downfield on the run, this time to within five of the Italian line.

17

The Italians don't secure this lineout so cleanly and Australia attack through a couple of phases before knocking on. However, a dangerous tackle gives Italy the chance to kick upfield for their own lineout.

19

Gower tries to release the inside man on the crash ball, but the Aussie defence is solid, and that man George Smith forces a concession of a penalty. Italy attacking from far too deep to threaten breaking the Aussie defence.

21

The Italian defence is looking a lot more solid now after the shaky start, and although the Australians win possession from their lineout they are unable to make any ground with 4 or 5 phases of attack.

22

No sooner have I said that, than the Italians almost undo themselves; Canavasio and Gower again not working in harmony, spilling the ball forward and almost giving Australia the chance to break through. The Italian defence scrambles and can only concede a 5 metre scrum. Pressure here.

23

The pressure is relieved as a rocket pass from Barnes is too much for O'Connor to collect and Italy have the scrum. This leads to a collapse and penalty, and the chance to go upfield for the Italians.

25

Again, from a deep, unthreatening position, Giteau sees masses of space behind the Italian right flank and drives a low kick into touch in the Italian 22. This will be crushing for the Italian forwards, who are consistently having to track back to defend set pieces near their line.

26

The lineout is won and the ball cleared, but with no great quality and Australia have the chance to attack from their own lineout just outside the 22. The Italian defence of the Australian ball is much better and they are resisting phase after phase of attack but, surely, it is only a matter of time if they continue to play the game in this territory.

28 10 - 0

TRY There we go. Giteau takes the ball at pace and slices between the two Italian centres. O'Connor is on his shoulder from fullback as Giteau gets his hands around the defender and offloads for another simple finish. Great day this is turning into for the teenager.

29

Again, Giteau is less successful with the boot and pushes the conversion wide.

31

Yet again, when Australia have possession in the middle of the field, they are able to secure good territory with kicks deep into the Italian right corner.

33 17 - 0

TRY Oooh, bit lucky this one. Barnes makes this one by running a great line from Giteau's inside pass and scythes through the broken Italian defence. The offload to the following-up Giteau goes straight onto his knee and bounces kindly into his arms as the remains of the Italian defence is wrongfooted.

34

That's better from the Italians, as the scrum half Canavasio breaks and runs the ball into the Australian 22 for the first time. He commits defenders well, but the Aussie cover defence scrambles Bergomasco into touch.

36

Australia clear but Italy regain possession and push back into Australian territory. They'll now take it up through the forwards.

38

And the forwards do work through several phases of attack, always making the gain line. This is where the Italians have some advantage over their opponents and look much more threatening in the close driving game. Eventually, they force a penalty for Aussie hands in the ruck.

39

We've had a couple of scrums reset here, as the forwards jostle for supremacy. The halftime siren has gone, but this is a scrum from a penalty so they will have to take it.

40

Great drive from the Australian pack, who shove Italy back and force them to scramble scrappy possession. However, the Aussies give away a penalty and give Italy the chance for three points. McLean duly converts it and they go into the break within two converted scores behind.

40+1 17 - 3

McLean - penalty goal

The Italians have got themselves on the scoreboard right at the end of that half, but really it has been Australia all the way and they look very comfortable. Perhaps they should have scored more.

Italy will need to keep the ball tight, retain possession and try to gain advantage in a rucking and mauling game, because if Australia continue to impose their shape on this game they will romp home comfortably.

40

The second half begins with a little bit of aerial ping pong, but Italy get the better of this exchange with a lineout btween the Australian 22 and 10-metre line.

41

Much more positive from the tourists, as they make their second genuine break of the game and once near the line use their forwards to take the ball up and bring in Australian defenders

42 17 - 8

EXTRAORDINARY TRY The ball is slung back as if Gower was going to attempt the drop goal from on the touch line, but he cuts along the touch line and bypasses the Australian defence, who look completely unready for that. He completes the move with a cute, one-handed reverse pass to Robertson on his shoulder, who crashes through three tacklers to stretch and place the ball on the line. Italy have got the perfect start they needed to get back into this game.

45

Much more even contest this, as the Italians look much more involved but the Australians try to come back at them using the pick-and-drive.

46

Should have been a try. The Australian backs work the ball to the right and make the break through Mortock, who passes out to the wing. All that was needed was a simple return inside pass and Mortlock was over unopposed. However, the pass goes behind him and the Italians bundle it into touch.

47 22 - 8

TRY Mortlock is not to be denied. They back across the field the other way from the lineout and Mortlock takes the ball, cutting back in on the angle. He bursts two tackles before crashing over the line. Sheer physicality and determination took him through there.

48 24 - 8

That has put a spoiler on the Italian resurgence, and as if to illustrate it, the restart goes straight out to touch.

50

McLean gains the Italians some territory with a long kick and we enter into a passage of play of return kicking.

52

Again, both sides trying to establish some territorial advatnage through the kicking game and Australia get the upper hand through a deep kick from Giteau and a clearance into touch by McLean from a narrow angle.

53

Interception. Tebaldi seizes on a loose pass and carries the ball upfield, however, he runs out of options and panics and slings the ball away aimlessly. Italy regain the ball but should have done more with that opportunity.

55

The Italian forwards again work the short ball and have some success, despite slow ball and slow progress. Gower is again back in the pocket and this time goes for the drop goal but pushes wide. Odd decision, 16 points behind and with good territory, they really need to be holding on to the ball.

58 29 - 8

HATRICK TRY Third try for O'Connor, and this time he had to do a little bit more to finish, taking a step to evade Parisse and then dive low under a tackle. However, that try was made by some incisive running from the whole Australian back line. Mortlock crashing through the middle and getting behind the Italian line, getting ball back quickly. There were at least three other Australians to break tackles and move the ball on quickly, including the hooker Moore.

59 31 - 8

The Australians have been threatening to do that constantly, and when they do the Italians have little answer. Giteau converts a tricky kick from out wide.

62

Italy attack through their forwards again. It is the area they do look to have superiority, but it is slow and laboured compared to the Australian attacking rugby and unless they had been able to dominate the game with it, will not be enough.

64

Mistakes begining to creep into the Italian game now. First Parisse and Trebaldi allow a ball to run loose at the back of a scrum, then an up and under is missed completely. It could be a tough last 15 for them.

65

Especially when they come off worse in the kicking game so consistently. Barnes, slipping into the fullback position, sees acres of space and places a kick to roll into touch halfway into the Italian 22.

67

To be honest, the whole game is looking a bit scrappier and has lost its shape. We've had a few substitutions, the Italians are looking to chase the points a bit and the Australians have probably slipped a little bit into exhibition mode. This isn't really leading to more flowing rugby, as we have a number of stoppages. It will probably favour the Aussies who have far more running attacking firepower.

69

Italy manage to string together some more coherent attacking phases, the flyhalf Gower gets his hands on the ball three times, with time and space to pass for about the first time all afternoon. The Aussies seem to be handling it ok, but it's important for the Italians that they play some proper rugby.

71

Australia win the ball back as a good tackle on Kimlin forces him to concede the penalty and Giteau kicks to touch to secure a throw-in on the Italian 22.

72

The attack looks threatening, but George Smith tries to offload in the tackle in too much contact and knocks on. The Italians pick up and clear upfield but the Australian back 3 are there to cover in numbers and clear.

74

A chip from Gower is picked up by Barnes and quick hands look to start a counter attack, but there is a knock-on. This is really the pattern at the moment, Italy attack, there is a turnover, and Australia, in trying to counter quickly, also make a mistake.

76

Some concerted pressure by the Italians, as Australia are forced to collapse a maul. The Italians continue to play to their strengths by electing to take the scrummage and win another penalty, as the Australians are again forced to collapse.

78

Smith does what he does best, and as the Italian pick and drive stalls, he is there the moment the ball is out of the ruck to steal, allowing the Australians to clear their lines

80

Neither side can make much of their possession, which is all middle of the field. Gower receives the ball from the back of the ruck and decides that enough is enough and opts to kick into touch and finish the game, rather than attempt one last dip at the Aussie line from deep. Towards the end it looked like both sides were finsing it a bit difficult to find any rhythm to play their game and with the result certain it meandered a bit.

Having said that, it was an impressive and effective performance by the Aussies, who dominated an Italian side that were unable to impose themselves and play to their strengths. Italy were good in parts, particularly up front, but the Aussies had too much quality across the field, particularly through Giteau, Barnes, Mortlock and O'Connor.

Both sides are now off to Melbourne, with a week to prepare for the second Test. I hope you can join me, Jamie Allaway, for that one and thanks for following the game today with Scrum.com.
