Profile

Donncha O'Callaghan is an Ireland and British & Irish Lions lock who has played over 50 times for his country and he is renowned for putting his body on the line.

O'Callaghan has represented Ireland at numerous age-levels and he won the World Youth Championship in 1998 as an under-19 alongside Brian O'Driscoll and Paddy Wallace. He made his international debut against Wales at the Millennium Stadium in a narrow 25-24 victory in 2003.

Early on in his Ireland career he struggled to make the starting line-up but he made the No.4 shirt his own with his tireless work rate and high tackle count.

In 2005 he went on tour to New Zealand with the Lions and he is now a permanent fixture in the Ireland and Munster side alongside Paul O'Connell. He had a year to remember in 2009 when he won the Grand Slam with Ireland and the Magners League with Munster, having won Heineken Cups in 2006 and 2008.

The year got even better for him as he was selected to play on the Lions tour of South Africa and he had the honour of captaining the side against the Southern Kings in a 20-8 victory. He was also selected as a replacement for Alun Wyn-Jones in the first Test in Durban and came on with ten minutes to go in a losing cause. He did not feature in the squads for the following two Tests.

And O'Callaghan pushed on for Ireland and Munster in the next two campaigns including playing for them in their 2010 Grand Slam triumph. O'Callaghan was later named in the 30-man squad for the 2011 World Cup.
