Ray 'Chico' Hopkins played once for Wales against England in the 1970 Five Nations. After replacing Gareth Edwards, the scrum-half inspired his side to a famous comeback as they won 17-13.

Behind Edwards in the pecking order, Hopkins then toured New Zealand with the 1971 British and Irish Lions and he featured in the midweek games. He reprised his role as Edwards' replacement in the Dunedin Test as the Lions ran out 9-3 winners.

He played his club rugby for Llanelli, starring in side that beat the touring All Blacks on October 31, 1972 at Stradey Park. He joined Swindon RLFC in 1972.
