Whetton shares with his brother, Gary, the distinction of being the only twins to have played Test rugby together for the All Blacks.

A utility forward in the early stages of his international career, he made his first four international appearances off the bench between 1984-85 before earning his first All Blacks start at flanker against Australia in 1986.

He toured South Africa with the unofficial New Zealand Cavaliers in 1986 and as a result served a two-Test ban on his return. But by 1987 he had reclaimed his All Blacks berth and as part of a powerful loose forward trio that also included Wayne Shelford and Michael Jones he shared in his side's 1987 Rugby World Cup triumph.

Whetton also featured during the All Blacks' disappointing 1991 Rugby World Cup campaign - earning the last of his 35 Test caps in the semi-final defeat to Australia.

Like his brother he was a loyal servant to Auckland and following his retirement served as player-coach with Kobe Steel in Japan. He later worked as a broadcaster and summariser on both TV and radio.
