The coaching landscape for the inaugural Super 15 season has begun to take shape in New Zealand with a trio of appointments.

Northland boss Bryce Woodward has won the race to succeed Shane Howarth as assistant coach at the Blues while Southland coach Simon Culhane has been handed a similar role with the floundering Highlanders franchise.

In Christchurch, former All Black prop Dave Hewett has been tasked with getting the best out of the Crusaders' set-piece after signing on as assistant forwards coach. Hewett, who won 22 Test caps between 2001 and 2003, will join the existing coaching team of Todd Blackadder and Daryl Gibson.

Both Woodward and Culhane are significant coups for their respective franchises. The Blues flattered to deceive again last season, finishing a disappointing ninth, and will doubtless benefit from Woodward's experience and mentality, with the Northland chief having twice coached New Zealand's 'Baby Blacks' to world championships.

Culhane, another former All Black, will bolster the Highlanders structure after the appointment of Wellington's Jamie Joseph in the role of head coach. The franchise again pulled up as the lowest-placed New Zealand side in 2010. Culhane and Woodward will continue in their current roles until the end of the current ITM Cup season.
