Western Province fly-half Willem de Waal will join fledgling Magners League franchise Benetton Treviso following the conclusion of the Currie Cup.

The former Emerging Springbok, who kicked a last-gasp conversion to secure a draw against the British & Irish Lions in 2009, will head to Italy in early November, with Province currently looking a safe bet for a home Currie Cup semi-final.

De Waal possesses excellent game-management skills and a water-tight kicking game and has previous European experience with Pro D2 side Narbonne, with whom he spent the 2007-08 season. He has played Super Rugby for the Bulls, Cats, Cheetahs and Stormers.

So far this season Treviso have ruffled plenty of feathers, beating Leinster and the Scarlets on their home track, with Brisbane-born Italian international Chris Burton wearing No.10.
